Putting Glendora Kids FirstBy Linda S. (Shirley) BoydCandidate for Governing Board Member; Glendora Unified School District | |

Ten percent of our District enrollment is inter-district transfers - one of the highest rates around. Some transfers are necessary, but they should be limited. The job of the Glendora Unified School District is to educate Glendora children. It's wonderful that our schools are good enough that parents from around the San Gabriel Valley want to send their children to school here, but it should be done only to complement our primary mission of educating Glendora children. We have a very high amount of transfers, and the admitted reason the District takes them is for the Average Daily Attendance money the District gets for each child from the state. Like almost every district in Los Angeles County, our enrollment is declining due to overall demographic trends. We have already taken the tough but necessary step of closing one elementary school. No more closures should be needed. Now let's take advantage of natural attrition over time and the overhead savings from closure of Williams Elementary School to make our budget and staffing fit the number of Glendora students we have as closely as possible. |
