Increasing Public Safety

By Bruce Philpott

Candidate for Council Member; City of Glendale

This information is provided by the candidate
The concept of public safety in a community is bigger than our public safety departments.
While we have outstanding police and fire departments, effective and lasting public safety efforts begin with the quality of organized youth programs that, if done right, will assure healthy and productive adults.

I support the expansion of after-school programs on our school campuses. As a detective working juvenile, most pre-delinquent and criminal offenses by youth occur during the hours between class ending and the time working parents arrive home. We will reduce the opportunities for our youth to make unsupervised poor choices through structured and organized activities on campus during those critical hours. These poor choices can affect them for the rest of their lives.

I have not, and never will, advocate firing any public safety personnel. But overtime and policy issues can be reviewed to ensure more efficient use of your tax dollars. I spent 28 years in public safety departments, retiring as Police Chief of Pasadena. I would never jeopardize the safety of Glendale residents.
