Proposed Community Center

By Stephanie Johnson

Candidate for Council Member; City of San Marino

This information is provided by the candidate
Do we need it? Who wants it? How do we pay for it? Is it economically viable?
The current plan under discussion by the City Council and School Board is to tear down the San Marino Center (Women's Club) and build a gymnasium on the site. The proposed project is a result of a "deal" made between the City and Schools during the Library project, where the City agreed to build a gym in exchange for the parking space behind the Library. One bad project does not a good one make.

I have suggested that the current location of the City Recreation Department, Stoneman School, is a more appropriate location for the Community Center. The School District is currently evaluating the future use of the Stoneman site.

The Community Center project requires full public vetting and a vote.
