Since 2007, Joe has served as the U.S. Representative for the 7th Congressional District of Pennsylvania. During his first term in Congress, Joe was named "most productive" freshman Congressman for legislation passed. Joe is the senior military veteran serving in Congress, and the highest-ranking former military officer ever elected to Congress. Joe is one of the few Congressman to sit on 3 House Committees: Armed Services; Education & Labor; and Small-Business (of which he is the Vice-Chairman). Prior to running for Congress in 2006, Joe served 31 distinquished years in our U.S. Navy rising to the rank of a 3-Star Admiral. He commanded the George Washington carrier battle group (30 ships,15,000 Sailors/Aviators/Marines/SEALS and over 100 aircraft)that conducted combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. He served as Presdeint's Clinton's Director of Defense Policy on the National Security Council in the White House. After 9/11, Joe was the first Director of "Deep Blue", the Navy's anti-terrorism unit. Joe also served as the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations responsible for the Navy's $70 Billion warfare requirements program. Joe was born and raised in Delaware County. He attended Cardinal O'Hara High School with his brother and six sisters (and where his mom taught). Joe followed in the footsteps of his father, a Navy Captain who fought in World War II, and graduated from the Naval Academy (2nd in his class). Joe also earned a PhD in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University. |
