To maintain early reading programs, small class sizes, and school libraries; support science, writing, mathematics, arts, and technology; retain and attract quality teachers and staff; and maintain safe schools, shall the San Carlos School District replace its existing special tax, increasing the rate by $75 for a total of $185 per parcel per year beginning July 1, 2009, with cost-of-living adjustments not more than 3% annually, an Independent Oversight Committee and offering a senior exemption?

Arguments For Measure S
Investing in the quality of our local public schools is essential if we are to maintain a thriving, vibrant community + one that provides all children with the gift of an excellent education.

We cannot rely on the state. We must act locally to provide our schools with stable, reliable funding and protect the San Carlos Elementary School District from Sacramento's endless budget crises.

Measure S will allow our schools to continue to provide all children a creative and challenging education, making each a life‐long learner prepared to meet the challenges of our global economy.

With Measure S funds, our district will:

  • Continue early reading and literacy programs;

  • Maintain small class sizes;

  • Retain quality teachers and staff;

  • Maintain technology, art and music programs;

  • Keep school libraries staffed; and

  • Upgrade classroom technology to support the teaching of reading, writing, science and math.

Together, we can act to maintain the excellent education offered in our local schools by voting yes on Measure S. All of the funds raised by Measure S will be spent in our school district. None can be seized by the State + and none will be spent on district administration.

The cost is reasonable. Approval of Measure S will increase local property taxes by $ 75 per year + less than $ 7 a month. An exemption will be offered to those 65 and older.

Measure S provides for strict accountability. An Independent Citizens' Oversight Committee will monitor and review all Measure S expenditures. This committee of local residents will make sure that all of these funds are spent as planned for the benefit of local students.

Education is each generation's gift to the next. Join us in voting Yes to invest in the excellence of the education offered to this and future generations in San Carlos.
