The Antelope Valley War On Gangs: The politics of distraction-Are we attempting to miss an opportunity to address profound issues of major community and economic development by way of an integrated approach to human development that captures the creativity and potential of communities, schools, and workplaces or, will we be intent on having our attention diverted again only to gain temporary relief from the pains of rapid growth and poor planning?
Throughout the history of the growth of cities, major changes that affect all communities and cause fragile and impersonal human ties are population growth, mobility, urbanization and more recently, a host of severe problems including those brought on by rapid growth of both legal and illegal immigration. Education is one of the most effective interventions for improving the social and economic future for individuals, communities, states, and the country as a whole. What must be involved at the community level of planning is a close relationship between the educational system and the economy. In other words, it is assumed that a community's economic development is inextricably linked to its educational development.

Given the changing nature of the global marketplace, the high school diploma is no longer sufficient for individuals seeking good jobs, or for communities building a vibrant economy. Education has a major impact on the community and economic development in this region. If the High Desert region desires to be at the forefront of economic success, we will need to create lasting systems and integrated structures that will help learners from pre-school to gray achieve, and also help workers advance in their careers. Citizens must be educated to understand that in order to improve their communities education has to be at the very heart of their effort.
