WILMA CHAN Assemblywoman Wilma Chan has been an outspoken advocate on behalf of Californias children and their families. Now she is running to be our State Senator. During her six years in the State Assembly, Wilma focused her legislative attention on progressive issues that matter to all of us: access to quality health care, expanded educational opportunities, affordable housing, living wage jobs, senior services, environmental health and economic development. WILMA CHAN GETS THINGS DONE. Wilma authored and passed more than 55 bills into law during her tenure in the Assembly. Increased access to pre-school opportunities through legislation and a $100 million budget allocation Stopped hospitals from price gouging lower and middle income families because they lack health insurance Passed legislation to make plumbing fixtures safer- making California first in the nation Passed legislation to ban hazardous PBDE chemicals from sofas, mattresses and other household goods - again, putting California first in the nation Authored landmark legislation to expand health insurance to 800,000 uninsured children Co-authored successful legislation to increase affordable housing, promote smart growth and increase funding to education. WILMA CHAN LEADS WITH A PURPOSE. Wilma has distinguished herself as a no-nonsense leader who stays focused on the issues. She¡¦s not interested in seeing herself on the evening news. Instead, she works tirelessly to build consensus in order to get things done not an easy task in Sacramento. Wilma has served as an elected official at the local level, so she knows what it takes to make a progressive difference in education, health care, social services and economic development. Member, Alameda County Board of Supervisors (1994-2000) Trustee, Oakland Board of Education (1990-94) Wilma holds a B.A. from Wellesley and a Masters Degree in Education Policy from Stanford University. A resident of Oakland for more than 20 years, Wilma now lives in Alameda. She is the mother of two adult children. Since being termed out of the Assembly in 2006, Wilma has been teaching at UC Berkeley. Wilma Chan has endorsed Barack Obama for President and is a member of his state leadership group.
