By Rod Guyton

Candidate for Council Member; City of Torrance

This information is provided by the candidate
I grew up in Torrance when my familiy moved to Torrance in 1962. I attended Yukon Elementary, Magruder Middle School, North Torrance High School (Class of 1979) and El Camino Jr. Collge. I have truly appreciated all that Torrance has afforded me which is why I chose to remain in Torrance and raise my family here.

Torrance has always had a small town feeling. However, over the past several years, I have been increasingly concerned that our city may be losing its small town feeling. Increasing high density, the poor condition of our streets, converting business land use into residential, the lack of open space to support our youth sports programs and the poor condition our Torrance schools are just a few of my concerns. We must begin dealing with these issues now before it is too late.

I have been coaching youth sports since 1982 and have served Torrance as a Planning Commissioner, Parks and Recreation Commissioner, Community Services Commissioner, and I was appointed to the Torrance City Council for 9 months when I was unanimounsly appointed by the city council to finish out Ted Lieu's seat on the city council. As a Councilman, I voted against high density over development on October 25th, 2005. You may visit http://www.torrnet.com to see the minutes of this meeting. This was the only development issue that came before me as a councilman. Other candidates will tell you what they would do if elected. I have proven it during my earlier 9 months on the council.

I previously owned 2 local manufacturing companies that were in the dental or aerospace industries and employed 68 people. I currently am the owner of a product representation company and the President of Dental Alloy Products.

The next Torrance City Council will see 6 council members with no more than 2 years of council experience. I believe that my experience as a business owner, long time Torrance resident and my commitment to keeping Torrance a great place to live and raise our families would greatly benefit the newly elected Torrance City Council.

Please consider allowing me to finish what I started by electing me to the Torrance City Council. Together we can protect our Quality of Life in Torrance.

Thank you,

Rod Guyton
