Job Creation

By Tim Wilson

Candidate for State Representative; District 171; Democratic Party

This information is provided by the candidate
We need to attract new jobs to the 171st district
Central Pennsylvania has seen an alarming loss of manufacturing jobs. In Centre County we have seen a 38% decrease in living wage jobs (those paying $14.00 an hour or more). During the tenure of our current state representative we have seen the closure or near closure of Corning, Murata, Rutgers, New Holland, and Cerro Metals. Little to nothing has been recruited to replace the manufacturing positions lost with these companies.

Attract New Manufacturing Jobs

We need to attract the next wave of manufacturing to this area. These jobs will be in the "Green Technology" field; manufacturing windmills, solar panels, wave turbines, bio-mass generation facilities, and bio-fuels. We are at a crossroads as a state and nation. We can make the investments allowing US companies to build these future economic powerhouses here and sell them to the rest of the world, or buy them from the rest of the world.
I say we make and sell them and we attract these jobs with a multi-pronged approach.
First we use the research capabilities of Penn State. By investing in and supporting research in these fields at Penn State we prove to companies interested in manufacturing these products that we are serious about being major players in these fields. If this region has the research occurring and an engineering workforce trained in these fields then we are very attractive to companies interested in building these products.
Second we use the tax code and cheap land of Central PA to our advantage. When companies are interested in coming here to build these new technologies we offer attractive tax incentives that make doing business in Central PA a no-brainer.
Also with generous social programs such as state paid health insurance for every child and a world class public education system, we make PA even more attractive to businesses. Not only because they save on insurance premiums but because the employees they recruit will want to live here.

Job Retention

Along with recruiting new industry we need to hold onto what we have. We need to continue to help the manufacturers that are here stay here. We can help with their tax burden and insurance burdens. As a representative I will listen to what companies need from the state to continue doing business here and do my best to get it for them.

State Contracts

Finally when rewarding state contracts we can create and protect PA jobs by using PA companies as preferred contractors. This means that in-state companies are allowed first dibs on state contracts and given a small cost incentive for being in-state.
