End the Iraq War

By Jackie Speier

Candidate for United States Representative; District 12

This information is provided by the candidate
Did you know?

  • Through 2007, taxpayers in the 12th Congressional District ALONE have paid $1.6 billion for the war in Iraq.

  • Over 1.6 million men and women have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001, almost one-third of whom have been deployed more than once.

  • As of the end of January 2008, almost 4,000 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq and over 29,000 have been seriously wounded.

What I Believe:

  • There are no easy solutions to the war in Iraq. It was badly executed from the start and the administration's arrogance and ineptitude has damaged the political stability of the entire Middle East and harmed our own country's national security.

  • It is imperative that we remove American troops as soon as possible and refocus our mission in Iraq on humanitarian reconstruction and peaceful diplomacy.

  • We must engage in untiring diplomatic efforts in the Middle East to help achieve stability and to isolate Al-Qaeda and other terrorists.

  • It is essential that Congress holds the Administration accountable through hearings and oversight. As your Congressmember, I will push the Administration, and all future administrations, to be open and honest with the legislative branch and, therefore, the American people.

  • There is no graver decision for a Member of Congress to make than the vote to declare war. As a matter of principle, I am opposed to the Bush Doctrine of pre-emptive war and I object to the injection of partisan politics into questions of national security.
