Iraq and Middle East Position

By Greg Conlon

Candidate for United States Representative; District 12

This information is provided by the candidate
My primary goal is to leave Iraq with honor, not haste and maintain stability in the Middle East.
The U.S. should honor the sacrifices of our troops and their families by working to accomplish the goals they are fighting to defend. I believe the primary purpose of our involvement was, and is, to restore and maintain stability in Iraq and the Middle East. The "cut and run" policy advocated by my opponents could cause both political and economic chaos in the region. A hasty withdrawal could allow Iran to be more aggressive with Iraq in interfering with their Democratic processes, or dominate it enough to restrain or cut off the oil supply from the Middle East. The region supplies about 20% of the world's oil each day, and if the flow of oil is restrained the law of supply and demand could escalate the price of gasoline in the U.S. significantly--possibly by $1.00 to $2.00 a gallon. This could slow down the U.S. economy and cause a further decline in our already fragile economic climate as long as we are dependent on foreign oil for our economy.

We must leave Iraq with honor, not haste. If elected I will visit Iraq and Afghanistan at the earliest opportunity to assess the situation, then work towards a reasonable resolution that does not jeopardize the political stability of these two countries.
