Radnor School Board Should Honor Its CommitmentBy Susan E. SternCandidate for Director; Radnor Township School District | |

We three Democrat candidates for Radnor School Board urge the Radnor School Board of Directors to defeat any proposal to install an artificial turf field at the new Radnor Middle School. We believe the Board should promptly review the current design plans for the natural grass field including sub-base materials, topsoil, seed type and quality, irrigation needs (storm water could be retained and used for irrigation), and maintenance practices so that a well designed and survivable grass field may be installed as soon as possible at the Middle School. A grass field is what the Township Design Review Board clearly recommended, is what the residents of Radnor thought they were getting until two months ago, is what 300 Middle School neighborhood residents sought in a 2005 petition, and is what "good faith" government requires our Board to provide. The School Board should not disregard its agreement with the Board of Commissioners in July 2005 to install natural grass. The field at RMS will not be regulation size and it will not have lighting for night use, therefore it is not an ideal location for artificial turf. If our best efforts to have a high quality natural grass field are ultimately not successful, the need for an artificial playing surface at the Middle School will be obvious. But, importantly, it will also be obvious that the District sought to honor its commitment to the township and the Middle School neighbors calling for a natural grass field and to implement a natural and environmentally sound solution for the needed playing surface. Any future modification would be based on real experience with natural grass and not speculative and projected concerns. Our friend and fellow candidate, Eric Zajac, has not signed this letter because he is a current board member and strongly believes that as an elected official he must attend the October 9, 2007 Board meeting with an open mind to all points of view. His views will be articulated during this meeting. Committee for Leadership Now Candidates Doug Blazey, Tsiwen Law, Susan Stern |
