Single passenger automobiles are the largest source of pollution in San Mateo County. Bring back SCOOT as an electric shuttle.SCOOT was a very popular, on demand shuttle service in San Carlos, successfully serving commuters, school children, shoppers, diners, and others. Unfortunately the parcel tax to continue SCOOT did not pass. Sam Trans cancelled bus routes that have never been restored, leaving parts of San Carlos with no bus service at all. One of the complaints I heard during the election was that as a free service, home owners who didn't use the service would be paying, while the riders, who benefitted most, would pay nothing. I think we should bring back SCOOT with a couple of changes. Riders should be asked to pay a nominal fare and the shuttle should be electric. This is the perfect form of energy for short trip shuttles. It would create no pollution, and would eliminate all the pollution created by the automobile trips it replaces. I think some funding would be available for this as a demonstration project. In 1906 London had a fleet of 48 electric buses. Though the buses short range allowed them to only run a half day per battery pack charge, a clever design allowed the lead acid battery packs to be swapped with a freshly charged pack at a bus barn during the lunch break. If London could do this in 1906, we can surely do it with modern technology. Bring back SCOOT as an electric shuttle. Pure electricity, the transportation energy of the future. Ask Tesla Motors. |
