Events in Foster City

By Patrick McKinnie

Candidate for City Council member; City of Foster City

This information is provided by the candidate
Foster City does not have enough events geared directly towards the different age groups. I want to have more of them.
Senior Wellness Weekend

According to the 2000 Foster City census, one out of every 10 people is 65 years old or older, and at least 5 percent of that age group is below the poverty line. At a time in their lives where their focus should shift from their children's needs to their own necessities, there are still individuals who are faced with challenges and do not know how to get help. The unfortunate part is that the resources are there, but a good percentage of the population does not know what is available. I feel the above situations could be improved if the city were to host a seasonal, weekend Senior Fair, where residents could receive health screenings, blood pressure checks and obtain information about diet and exercise, health insurance, driver's safety, handicap assistance, diabetes, cholesterol, Parkinson's Disease, melanoma and other cancers, eye health, hearing aids, emergency contact information and other concerns. Let's face it -- we have a very large population of residents in the 30-to 60-year-old category. Eventually individuals in this group will be in need of senior services and preparation is key.

Events geared toward youth

As many of us know, Foster City is becoming a popular choice for raising families. And though we haven't been able to provide our children with a public high school yet, it would be a step in the right direction if our city could at least provide them with a few opportunities to showcase their talent, encourage creativity, and build their confidence and character. By working with area schools and daycare facilities, city officials could be part of a potentially rewarding event for kids of all ages in our community. Essay contests, city-wide scavenger hunts, pet parades, talent competitions, fun volunteer projects and youth triathlons are a few ideas that would not only be enjoyable for the youth participating, but also for the entire community to appreciate. When compared to the other habits that are made available to our youth each day, having a child spend a few weeks preparing for a triathlon or essay contest is a great way to utilize free time
