Shall the Yonkers City Charter be amended to include a special election in the process for filling a vacancy in the office of City Council President and City Councilmember and thereby reduce the time that a vacancy can be filled by appointment?
The proposed Charter Amendment would provide for a special election as part of the process for filling a vacancy in the office of City Council President or in the office of City Councilmember. Currently, the City Charter empowers the Mayor to appoint a person to fill a vacancy in the office of City Council President, subject to ratification by the City Council, and also empowers the Mayor to appoint a person to fill a vacancy in the office of City Councilmember. The proposed Charter Amendment would limit the duration of those appointments to the next general election, at which time the voters of Yonkers would elect a person to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term.
