1. The American occupation in Iraq continues to be enormously costly in dollars and in lives. What is your position on how our government should proceed?
I am cosponsoring John Murtha's resolution proposing to redeploy troops from Iraq. As a member of the congressional Out of Iraq Caucus, I believe we should keep pressing for answers, demanding accountability, and searching for ways to get our brave soldiers back home as soon as possible.2. What is your impression of the roll-out of the Medicare Prescription Drug program so far, and what changes would you propose to make it better?
The program is extraordinarily confusing; enrollment deadlines should have been extended. Medicare should be able to negotiate lower prices; import safe, cheaper drugs; eliminate "doughnut holes"; allow seniors to choose a plan administered directly by Medicare; and bar increased co-payments during the year when beneficiaries cannot change plans.3. Where do you stand on the current balance between security and civil rights?
House leadership shows complete disregard for basic constitutional protections, passing "court-stripping" measures, and ignoring or violating due process guarantees. While I continue to fight for New York's homeland security needs, I've also introduced measures to strengthen the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board as envisioned by the 9/11 Commission.
