1. The American occupation in Iraq continues to be enormously costly in dollars and in lives. What is your position on how our government should proceed?
Steve Harrison opposes the war in Iraq and calls for the withdrawal of forces as soon as it is consistent with the safety of our troops. The original reasons given by the Bush administration for the war were false and a rationale for continuing the war has not been articulated. There is no present objective and no ties to the war on terrorism.2. What is your impression of the roll-out of the Medicare Prescription Drug program so far, and what changes would you propose to make it better?
I would propose to eliminate a donut-hole in coverage, abolish the penalty tax for late enrollment and move away from the trend of privatizing. I support allowing the federal government to negotiate lower prescription drug prices for Medicare and legalizing the re-importation of FDA approved drugs from Canada and Europe.3. Where do you stand on the current balance between security and civil rights?
The United States must never torture or otherwise violate the principles of the constitution. The current administration has condoned torture and stripped our citizens of freedoms in the name of patriotism. Our country has, in many instances, unfairly profiled and marginalized Arab Americans and characterized them as terrorists. I am generally opposed to the Patriot Act.
