1. The American occupation in Iraq continues to be enormously costly in dollars and in lives. What is your position on how our government should proceed?*

Answer from John Hall:

I agree with Congressman John Murtha in a plan for a phased redeployment of our troops from Iraq. Our continued presence there, combined with incidents of torture, accidental bombing or shooting of innocent Iraqis, is turning our traditional friends around the world against us, aiding terrorism and threatening our security.

Answer from Sue W. Kelly:

People deserve tax relief. I've voted for tax cuts that are saving Hudson Valley families thousands of dollars per year. As long as I'm in Congress I'll work to keep taxes down and money in the pockets of people who earned it

2. What is your impression of the roll-out of the Medicare Prescription Drug program so far, and what changes would you propose to make it better?*

Answer from John Hall:

Rather than continuing a system of give-a-ways to pharmaceutical companies, we need a plan that allows Medicare to negotiate for the lowest possible price to rein-in the skyrocketing costs of prescription drugs. The new Medicare prescription drug law was the wrong solution; it must be repealed and replaced.

Answer from Sue W. Kelly:

I opposed the Bush energy bill because it gave tax breaks to oil companies and did not do enough to decrease our dependence on foreign oil. Tax breaks should go to companies that are developing wind, solar, bio-technology and renewable.

3. Where do you stand on the current balance between security and civil rights?*

Answer from Sue W. Kelly:

The PATRIOT Act broke down bureaucratic barriers that prevented agencies from working together against terrorists. It's vital to our national security. The tools that are often criticized have been used against the mafia and drug traffickers - why should these tools not be used against terrorists who want to kill us?

Answer from John Hall:

We need a national security plan that doesn't infringe on our democratic rights. The proposed expansion of the Patriot Act threatens our civil liberties. For example, unwarranted wire tapping, suspension of legal protections for suspected criminals and state sanctioned torture are unacceptable ways of securing America's families.
