Phillip B. Thomason is a Professor of Spanish at Pepperdine University's Malibu campus in the International Studies and Languages Division. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Montevallo in Spanish and Political Science, a Master of Hispanic Studies degree from Auburn University and the Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Thomason teaches all levels of Spanish, but most recently his teaching assignments have been in upper division language, literature and civilization. Working with International Programs since 1988, Dr. Thomason has served as director of the Spanish Intensive Language Program in Madrid and resident director of the Latin America pilot programs (Costa Rica, Argentina and Spain).In all he has spent about 4 years living overseas. He has been on the Modern Language faculty at Pepperdine University since 1986 and served for 14 years as Coordinator of Languages (managing faculty, courses and resources) until Spring of 2006. His major area of research is El Coliseo de la Cruz: Madrid's First Permanent Theater (1737-1859) for which he received a fellowship from the Ministry of Culture of Spain. His book on the subject is available from Tamesis Books, Amazon and others. Dr. Thomason's most recent book came out in the Spring in soft cover (Thomason, Phillip B. and Byrne, Ceri. The Eighteenth Century Theatre in Spain, A Bibliography of Criticism and Documentation, Glasgow: University Press, 2005, pp. 210) and will be released in hardback this fall. Dr. Thomason lives in Port Hueneme with his wife, Cathy. As a young man his interest in politics led to his being a bumper sticker boy in gubernatorial campaigns and participating in Youth Legislatures service one year as youth Doorkeeper of the senate. Presently, he is active in local community issues, a local volunteer, and member of the Chamber of Commerce. Their son, Brian also works at Pepperdine University as the Manager of Financial Planning. Aside from spending time with his family, his pastimes include running (completed San Francisco, Catalina, LA and Madrid marathons), reading, seeing films, gardening... He is pasionate about the Hueneme community and seeks to help build strong community support for developing all aspects of the city. |
