San Joaquin County, CA November 7, 2006 Election
Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Ken Vogel

Candidate for
Board of Supervisors; County of San Joaquin; Supervisorial District 4

This information is provided by the candidate

LOWER TAXES AND LESS WASTE: Ken Vogel is a fiscal conservative who will hold the county government accountable. Ken will fight to lower our taxes and cut wasteful spending.

PROPERTY RIGHTS ADVOCATE: Ken opposes the government's use of eminent domain to take private property for private commercial gain. Ken will fight to protect our property rights.

AGRICULTURE'S ANSWER: As a farmer and business owner for 30 years, Ken understands how regulations are destroying family farms. Ken will work to cut the "red tape" so farmers deal with less paperwork and can get back to farming. Agriculture is our county's number one industry, with an annual production of over one billion dollars and a base of over 65,000 employees. Since agriculture can only exist if it is profitable, our county's policies should reflect this need by cutting unnecessary costs and restrictions. Ken will fight to make our "right-to-farm" ordinances stronger, protecting farmers from frivolous lawsuits. Ken Vogel has been endorsed by the San Joaquin Farm Bureau Federation.

Ken Vogel also supports the efforts to promote our agricultural products, encouraging people to buy "San Joaquin Grown."

PROTECTING OUR WATER: Water is vital to the future of San Joaquin County. We need to guard our underground water resources from being exhausted. Ken Vogel will actively lobby for more water storage areas and more surface water.

SMART GROWTH: Ken Vogel will make sure that growth does not occur without the infrastructure needed to sustain it. San Joaquin County is undergoing an unprecedented building boom and needs to address the necessary roads, parks and schools with "smart planning." Roads should be able to handle traffic without gridlock. Parks should be available for families to relax together. Schools should be ready to receive children from their own neighborhoods (preventing hours of daily bus rides to distant schools).

Ken Vogel is running for Supervisor to represent you, not a group or special interest. He is a fresh voice for the citizens of San Joaquin County, putting PEOPLE before politics.

REPAIRING OUR ROADS: We should be able to travel from one end of town to the other without destroying the car. Roads are deteriorating rapidly and need to be repaired. The county government cannot avoid the pothole issue forever. Ken will make sure our roads meet the demands of the county's growing population.

END TRAFFIC GRIDLOCK: Not only do we need to repair our streets, but certain roads must be widened to handle the traffic that is becoming increasingly heavy. In addition, Ken supports the development and expansion of alternate transportation opportunities, such as light rail and the ACE train.

TRASH DUMPING: Our rural areas are inundated with heaps of garbage, discarded washing machines, refrigerators, televisions and other trash along the roadside. As the cost of dumping unwanted items at waste disposal sites has increased, so has the rate of dumping trash on county roads. Ken Vogel has taken the lead in finding cost-efficient ways of solving the county's trash-dumping problem. In an effort to find solutions, Ken has been in contact with other counties, successful in preventing trash dumping. Ken plans to bring these same solutions to San Joaquin County.

COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION: As a Trustee of the Linden School Board and a retired Lodi school Principal, Ken Vogel has 36 years of experience as an educator. He understands what our children need to reach their full potential. He has worked for various educational causes - the acquisition of a safe and modern bus fleet, the construction of badly-needed new facilities and the improvement of a curriculum, resulting in higher test scores. Ken has a lifelong commitment to education.

PUBLIC SAFETY: Endorsed by Lodi Firefighters, Stockton Firefighters, and State Correctional Peace Officers, Ken will fight to put more deputies on patrol, as well as establishing resident deputies in key rural areas (Thornton, Linden, Lockeford, Acampo, etc.)

Youth gangs are a growing problem in San Joaquin County and the Sheriff's Department needs a gang unit to work closely with our cities' police departments. We can be proactive with a resident deputy program and youth activities - still taking a hard line against crime!

Our rural fire agencies are facing dire financial straits. Ken is committed to finding a way to maintain our area's fire protection services, urging the county to support consolidations and joint service areas whenever possible.

BUILDING A NEW COUNTY JAIL: Ken will work toward building a new county jail with existing county revenue and state money. We can pay for a new jail without passing a bond. The new jail will ensure that convicts serve their sentences instead of being released to commit more crimes.

CREATING JOBS: San Joaquin County is California's third least-friendly county to business. Ken Vogel will work hard to create a more business-friendly attitude, streamlined procedures, cooperation between departments and the review of all types of regulations (why are they there and what was their original intent?)

Let's make our county business-friendly and develop a sustainable base of well-paying jobs. Residents who have moved because they can afford a home here, should also be able to work here.
