My Vision for Lincoln Unified: Putting Children First

By Van-Ha To-Cowell

Candidate for Board Member; Lincoln Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
I have seen first-hand how education can make a difference in the lives of children and families. That's why I believe passionately in putting the interests of children first in all decisions and activities at Lincoln Unified.
I emigrated to the US from Viet Nam at age 19. Unable to contact my family after the war, I raised my younger brother and worked three jobs while completing my Bachelor's degree. I later earned a Master's degree in English Language Development. I am a passionate believer in the power of education. I have over 20 years of teaching experience in public schools and have taught students of different needs - from second language learning to gifted education.

I have been an active child advocate in the Lincoln community. I successfully pushed for improvements to Lincoln's Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE) and have served on the District GATE committee for 4 years. Most recently, I worked on behalf of eighth graders to press the District for equal treatment in math placement at the high school. I served on the Citizens Committee to select Lincoln's new superintendent. I attend nearly all Lincoln Board meetings and frequently speak on behalf of students and families.

I believe that Lincoln must focus on boosting the achievement of all students and ensure equal access to programs, resources, and facilities. We must provide students with the opportunity to reach their greatest potential. And we must ensure that parents and the community have the fullest opportunity to participate in their children's education.
