In my hometown, my father was the Superintendent of Public Schools, and my grandfather was the Chief of Police. From a very young age, I was taught the value of public service, and it has played a very important role in both my personal and professional lives.

My political philosophy embraces the idea of working together. In an age rife with partisanship and antagonism, I firmly believe that progress is made through cooperation, not conflict. I saw this around the world as an elections monitor and democracy worker for President Jimmy Carter, where we brought conflicting (sometimes warring) factions to the negotiating table to advance the cause of peace.

In San Francisco, we are known for our spirit of cooperation and unity. With less of the partisan polarization standing in our way which affects so much of the rest of the country, the elected officials of this City have an opportunity few of their counterparts around the country will ever have: to put aside partisanship and focus on cooperation and progress. As Supervisor, I pledge to bring the spirit of cooperation and collegiality to City Hall.
