The Issue of Declining Enrollment for Cajon Valley School DistrictBy Marsha L. SabenCandidate for Board Member; Cajon Valley Union School District | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
We need to find new solutions to decreased funding from the State due to declining enrollment populations. Our funding for the classroom is based upon the number of students enrolled in our classrooms and when that declines, so does our funding. However, there are basic costs running and maintaining a school that do not decrease. The Learning Environment Task Force has been established to "think outside the box" to create new school environments and/or organizational structures to best meet the needs of our students and staff over the next 5-10 years. It is important to include a variety of perspectives from the community as well as from educators and parent to create long-term, viable strategies that keep students who live within our district boundaries attending our schools as well as attract those from other areas who want to attend because of unique, quality programs. I also believe that schools can be community centers for families that provide support and learning opportunities outside the regular school day. When more parents and community members see their local school site as a place to learn and connect with others, they become inclined to participate and support the school during the school day. |
