Craig Maxwell, 43, is a third-generation La Mesan. In 1935, his grandfather bought the La Mesa Planing Mill - a lumber mill and cabinet shop located where the La Mesa Police station stands today. The Mill, established in 1896, remained in Craig's family for over 60 years. Intimately familiar with his home town, Craig's passions include (voracious) reading, surfing, and time spent in the East County's mountains and deserts: hiking, running, and cycling. A graduate of the University of San Diego, Craig has also worked a wide variety of jobs, including everything from construction estimating to swinging a hammer in the field. He is currently the owner of Maxwell's House of Books, a small used bookstore in the heart of La Mesa Village specializing in academic and scholarly titles. His maternal grandfather, Vernon Wahrenbrock, founded Wahrenbrock's Book House - a San Diego landmark. Craig and his wife, Lynn, a graduate of Cal Lutheran, former freelance editor, and now working at the bookstore, have been married 16 years and are faithful members of their church.
