Many times standard methods of teaching do not work for culturally, economically and socially challenged kids. Our District, as the Hispanic population increases, needs to formalize strategies, curriculum and programs to assist this population.
Menifee Union School District is faced with a growing Hispanic population that is an educational disaster in the making. The continued denial of the tools of excellence will exact a high economic toll on individual Hispanics, the Hispanic community and the nation as a whole. Not to mention would it could do to our test scores, our ADA and our overall economics. The education of this challenged population needs to be custom designed to deal with the cultural differences. There needs to be more home visits, there needs to be a meeting of the minds so to speak with teachers getting to know the parents, developing a trust factor with this population. If standard curriculum and programs do not work than we need to customize our curriculum to meet the needs of this specific population. Most of these kids are born here in the United States, a very high percentage of them have been with the MUSD since pre-school .... by 6th, 7th & 8th grade they should be able to read, write, comprehend, know their ABCs. If they don't - something needs to be done. I am currently working with Administration and this challenged population so they can move forward educationally. It is our responsibility as a school district to do this and I will and have become an integral part of this movement.
