ALLEN, MAYO, STRANGE
THE RACE FOR three positions on the Mt. Diablo school board has attracted five challengers to the three incumbents seeking to keep their seats. The district, with 35,000 students, is the second largest in the East Bay, covering a large area of central and eastern Contra Costa County.
There has been considerable dissatisfaction among district teachers because of a lack of health benefits that are enjoyed by their peers in most other school districts in the region.
This disparity of pay and benefit packages has made it more difficult for the district to retain high-quality teachers, who can get a better deal elsewhere.
Many of the candidates running for the Mt. Diablo school board understand that the district needs to offer pay and benefits similar to those in neighboring districts. But finding the funds to do so will not be easy.
Another challenge for the school board is to provide equal educational opportunities throughout a diverse district and to accommodate the needs of fast-growing Bay Point, which should have its own high school.
What is most needed on the Mt. Diablo school board is expertise, experience and an understanding of the work that needs to be done to achieve pay and benefit upgrades for teachers and academic equity in all parts of the district.
We believe that the three incumbents on the board -- Dick Allen, Linda Mayo and Paul Strange -- are best equipped to deal with the problems facing the district.
Allen was elected to the board in 1997, after serving as a district teacher and administrator for 41 years. He wants to raise compensation to attract and retain good teachers and seeks to boost academic achievement.
Mayo also was elected to the board in 1997 and is the current board president. She emphasizes the need to raise academic achievement, improve compensation and make schools safe.
Strange was appointed to the board in March. He says the district should consider covering health benefits for teachers, something they negotiated away in an earlier contract.
Strange wants to make sure students can read and write English when they graduate.
Two of the five challengers, Tina Gregory, a financial adviser, and Ruth Rodriguez, a former probation officer and social worker, are well-qualified candidates.
However, at this time we believe the three incumbents, Allen, Mayo and Strange, should be retained on the school board and merit voter support on Nov. 7.
