Political Philosophy for Lara E. DeLaney

When I ran for City Council four years ago, I did so for one reason: to make a positive change for Martinez. I believed that my time, my talents, my experience and education, and my passion for this town could help make it an even better place to live. So I ran on a platform of progress that included redevelopment of the downtown and the marina, citywide infrastructure improvements, stronger code enforcement, fiscal responsibility, cultural enrichment, and the kind of growth that would bring economic revitalization and higher property values. I also recognized that progress is not possible without vigorous public safety and environmental protection, which is the context for social development. Perhaps most importantly, I understood that Martinez has a treasured history. Ours is a heritage that must not be abandoned, but rather, incorporated into our vision of a healthy, progressive and unique community. It is not only our special "brand identity," it is part of the reason why we love Martinez. Thus, I ran for election with the best interests of Martinez at heart--not any special interests. And I am proud that I have served in this manner. I am beholden to no property developer, no labor union, and no campaign contributor. Certainly I appreciate the support I have received from those who believe in my vision and my abilities. But as my father reminded me the night of my election, I was chosen to serve the people, all the people, to the best of my abilities. I have done that. I have been relentless in my determination to usher in progress. I realize that many in the community do not share my belief in redevelopment as a tool for progress. Many do not support the level of growth in the downtown that I believe is necessary to jump-start our revitalization. In fact, many may not agree at all with my platform for change. However, I believe I have made the right choices, the tough choices, for our future. I ask you to support me so I may continue to work for the best interests of Martinez. |
