Yes on Measure ABy Karen (Johnson) HemphillCandidate for School Director; City of Berkeley | |
This information is provided by the candidate |
I urge everyone to vote YES on Measure A which is a continuation of the same amount of local funding that Berkeleyans already provide for our public schools. It is critical that Berkeley voters pass Measure A which continues local funding for our public schools (state and federal funding is not enough!). Measure A is NOT a new or increased tax, but is a renewal of the same level of local funding that we already provide to our schools. Our decades long commitment of providing local funding supports smaller class sizes, art and music programs for elementary and middle school students, and our school libraries. Measure A will also continue funding for teacher training, computer and technology support, as well as program evaluation. Measure A can only be used for very specific purposes which are listed in the measure (for example 66% of the funds go toward more classroom teachers to reduce class size) and the measure includes provisions for community involvement and oversight. Measure A directly supports student achievement and is NOT a bond measure for facility construction. If Measure A does not pass, our schools will be devastated - and it is very likely that much of what makes Berkeley schools better than most of our neighboring schools will be undone - undermining student achievement AND lowering property values. Please vote YES on Measure A. |
