I support Senator Khuel's SB840 for State Healthcare and ensure my constituents are not deprived of the law which dictates Nurse Patient Ratio Rights.

LA County desperately needs nurses. I will work to ensure we produce quality nurses to relieve the immense nurse shortage and reduce nurse to patient ratio in our public and private hospitals. Already nurses are overwhelmed by a 5 to 1 patient to nurse ratio and in fact, California Law states the ratio must not be more than 4 to 1 but our Governor Schwarzenagger had chosen to ignore that law resulting in forced inferior care to patients. I believe the shortages of nurses had specifically contributed to the problems at the King Drew Medical Center where the prized trauma center was to be closed as well as the neonatal unit and the geriatric center. These units would have had a chance to survive and help the people in the most disadvantaged area of Los Angeles flourish if we had qualified nurses.
