Brian Ulaszewski Is Taking The Initiative To Provide More Parking

Brian Ulaszewski has taken the initiative to create over one hundred new parking spaces for residents and businesses in the downtown and adjacent communities.
(May 23, 2006) -- Understanding the degree to which parking is impacted in the First and Second Council Districts of Long Beach, Brian Ulaszewski has taken the initiative to create over one hundred new parking spaces for residents and businesses in the downtown and adjacent communities. Brian Ulaszewski's proposal for Armory Park will provide approximately fifty new diagonal parking stalls for residents on both the East and West side of Martin Luther King Avenue between 7th and 10th Streets. This will augment new diagonal parking already to be provided on 8th Street West of Martin Luther King Avenue.

Currently, the proposed Armory Park (which would include permanently closing off Martin Luther King Avenue between 6th Street and 7th Street) is undergoing an intensive traffic study. The traffic realignment to take place in conjunction with the formation of this park will provide the opportunity for the two-sided diagonal parking in question. The Armory Park was conceptualized, designed and proposed by Ulaszewski and has received the support of Councilmember Bonnie Lowenthal as well as $1 million of Redevelopment Agency funding. Armory Park plans and other park plans Ulaszewski is developing can be viewed at http://www.brianulb.com.

Elm Avenue is 50' from curb to curb. In addition, in April, Ulaszewski opened discussion with the City's Traffic Engineering Department regarding providing new diagonal parking on the West side of Elm Avenue between Ocean Boulevard and 6th Street. This could provide an additional fifty to sixty new parking stalls for businesses and residents, while also providing additional parking meter revenue for the City.

City staff will start conducting a survey of city services and property owners that might be impacted by this new diagonal parking. Ultimately, the decision will lie in the hands of the City Council to adopt a resolution for the addition of diagonal parking at both locations.

Ulaszewski, who practices architecture and planning downtown, developed both concepts on his way to work as he walked along these wide streets. "I just brought a surveyor's wheel one day to see what the distance was from curb-to-curb. I then checked with the City's standards for diagonal parking -- and what do you know, we've got some more on-street parking!"

Innovations like these are just part of any overall solution to parking problems in the downtown and surrounding communities. Ulaszewski will continue to find new opportunities for additional parking in our community to help relieve the pressure on local residents and businesses.

As a community leader, commissioner and consultant to Long Beach, Brian Ulaszewski will provide the broadest vision for the Second City Council District. Through his various volunteer and consultant activities, he has or is currently working with over twenty city departments, agencies and bureaus and over a dozen community groups in seven of the nine City Council Districts. The breadth of Brian's involvement, experience and expertise will allow him to quickly take the reins of the now-vacant Second City Council District, and serve its diverse communities and interests with a balanced perspective and open mind.

Brian understands that Long Beach's greatest resource is its population and will promote greater involvement of the City's residents and stakeholders. He has adopted this philosophy for this election as his campaign is relying on the skills and talents of the people of the Second District. Money cannot buy the energy that our campaign is generating.

This campaign is like no other. Please visit http://www.brianulb.com to learn why. Brian can be reached at brian@brianulb.com
