Smart Voter

Especiallly for San Pedro voters, but for all to know...

By John S. Stammreich

Candidate for Member, Republican Party County Central Committee; County of Los Angeles; Assembly District 54

This information is provided by the candidate
Being an active neighbor in local San Pedro issues, I look forward to continuing the great strides being made for businesses & communities throughout the 54th AD.
From stepping up to reduce illegal fireworks in our neighborhood to holding developers accountable for traffic & quality-of-life issues, I look forward to taking my proactive approach to community involvement to the next level by representing you on the 54th Republican Central Committee. I believe in getting past closed-minded "positions" and getting to the real "issues" of the neighborhood's concerns. Bad attitudes, false impressions and closed minds have no place in our community, and often result in developers and local officials ignoring the nearby city & neighborhood councils when creating their plans. In NW San Pedro for example, I don't want the community to lose its voice when developers & the LAUSD discuss plans for our neighborhood. By creating the opportunity for open dialogue, I will maintain the credibility of these councils as the neighborhood advocates that are steadfast but fair.

I believe in good, smart development that gives back to the community. Long Beach, Palos Verdes & San Pedro are ripe with opportunities for new business & new residences, but these should not add unnecessary burdens to those that came to this great district first. I'm unsatisfied with the performance of our public schools in preparing our children, and I'm unsatisfied when long-time residents tell me "that's the way it's always been" about something. I refuse to believe that when neighbors like you believe these are issues impacting our community, and I want to make sure they are addressed.

The news of the stalled Waterfront project brought to light a big obstacle to most improvements in San Pedro. The threat of lawsuits has scared most officials into dedicating extra time and city resources to pander to a vocal minority who are abusing the process. Residents and business owners in San Pedro have waited a long time to get these projects started. My response to this threat is "Bring it on" and let's get these projects going!

The process has allowed ample opportunity for all stakeholders who live and work in San Pedro and surrounding communities to voice their opinions, concerns & recommendations. Our elected and appointed officials have taken these and worked hard to develop a plan that takes all of these into some consideration. Because the $18.4M improvement projects slated for 2007 "could pave the way" for higher-density improvements they do not desire, the vocal minority is attempting to hijack the process. What this vocal minority wants is to have the earlier projects be done in such a manner that eliminates any opportunities for San Pedro to lure potential businesses, including hotels, restaurants & shopping. Earlier that week, the Mayor discussed the fiscal dilemma of property tax revenues going down. With groups like this operating within city limits, it's no wonder why. Private property owners, both residential and business, pay these taxes; parks and open space do not.

I thank you for your support in choosing me, John Stammreich, to represent you on the 54th AD Republican Central Committee.
