Ken Masse was born October 23, 1948, to Alderic and Pearl Masse. The sixth of eight children, Ken grew up on a small farm in Northeastern Maine. His childhood was marked by hard work and straight forward values.

His father dreamed of moving his family to California, but died when Ken was only eight years old. Vowing to realize her husband's dreams, Ken's mom moved the family to Pasadena, California, in 1957. The family worked hard to make ends meet. In his teens, Ken worked various jobs to help out.

In June 1970, Ken began his career as a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. After graduating from the Academy, he held assignments at the Hall of Justice Jail, Civic Center Security Unit, Norwalk Station and the Training Bureau. He promoted to sergeant in 1982, and spent the next seven years at Lakewood Station. In 1989, upon on promoting to the rank of Lieutenant, he held assignments at the Inmate Reception Center, Carson Station, Field Operations Region II Headquarters, Advanced Training Bureau and Transit Services Bureau.

Ken was promoted to the rank of captain by Sheriff Lee Baca in December 2000. For the next three years he commanded the Department's Court Services East Bureau where he was responsible for more than 600 employees assigned to 23 Superior Court facilities within the Citrus, Compton, Norwalk, and Pasadena Districts.

In 2003, he took over Court Services Central Bureau, having responsibility for all the courts in the Los Angeles Civic Center.

After nearly 35 years of service with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Ken retired in March 2005, to pursue his dream to run for L.A. County Sheriff in 2006.

Ken resides in West Covina with his wife Chery,l a sergeant with the Sheriff's Department. Ken and Cheryl attend Faith Community Church in West Covina. They have three adult children and six grandchildren. Ken enjoys spending time with his grandchildren, reading, weightlifting and traveling.
