I am running for Mayor to represent your interests, not the special interests.

My career in Long Beach began long ago + not as a public servant but as a newspaper delivery boy. It was then, riding through our neighborhoods, that I came to appreciate our great city, its strength and its diverse people.

As a teenager, I worked at the Pike at Rainbow Pier, and watched our transition from a historic navy town to a city of enormous potential. I attended St. Anthony's Grammar and High Schools, California State University, Long Beach, and have earned a Masters Degree in Environmental Health.

As our city's former Director of Environmental Health, I helped create a better quality of life for our citizens by working with State and other local officials to reduce pollution in our air, rivers and beaches.

I proudly served our country as a 1st Lieutenant in the California National Guard, and my beautiful wife Michelle and I have been married for 36 years with three children.

I am an Environmental Advocate, a successful Businessman, and have worked side by side with Mayor O'Neill on the City Council. The Mayor and I both share the belief that our city will continue to grow and prosper.

I am a candidate with a vision for the people, not the powerful.

My vision for Long Beach includes:

Hiring 300 new police officers within four years, and an aggressive anti-gang plan. Our new officers will protect our neighborhoods, airport, and international seaport. Police Chief Batts has asked for an additional 300 officers, and as Mayor, I will deliver. I also support the construction of a new public safety station in Central Long Beach.

Making Long Beach the most environmentally responsible city in California. I will create a new Energy and Conservation Commission that will be charged with protecting our most valuable resources and making Long Beach a sustainable city. I will demand a reduction in port pollution, increase our use of Solar Energy, add new parks, and convert the city fleet to Hybrid vehicles. I also strongly oppose the installation of a Liquefied Natural Gas facility at our port, a plan that poses very real threats to our environment and our citizens.

A Citizen guarantee to repair damaged sidewalks within 30 days and remove graffiti and fill potholes within 3 days. Every resident of our city deserves a neighborhood free from crime and graffiti and with quality streets, alleys, and curbs. As Mayor, I will be guided by a Neighborhood Bill of Rights that will protect our residents.

New innovative education and after school programs. I will partner with our local schools to return vocational educational to our middle and high schools, and will also aggressively work with our schools and non-profits to expand after school programs. During my first year as Mayor, I will propose new, long term financial support for our city's libraries. These new programs will create what I call the Education Dividend - the benefits our city will reap when our home grown youngsters become the innovators and business leaders of tomorrow.

New jobs for a developing workforce. Job creation is critical. We have world class hospitals and I will look for innovative opportunities in biomedical and pharmaceutical related research and technology. We will also continue our aggressive approach to protect and expand our aerospace, business, and employment base.

My 8 years as President of the Belmont Shore Business Association, and my resolve and commitment to re-open Community Hospital, saving more than 400 professional jobs, has demonstrated my commitment to our city and local economy. I will deliver strong leadership and work with all of our community leaders to move Long Beach forward. The strength of our city's fabric is our diverse neighborhoods and the families who live and work in them.

Long Beach has been my home for over 50 years. I ask for your confidence, trust, and your vote for Mayor on June 6th.
