Susan McGhie has over the years spent thousands of hours working with and on behalf of the children and young people in our community. She is committed to giving her best efforts to public service and creating outstanding educational opportunities for the children in our schools. She brings a wealth of experience as a business professional, volunteer, teacher, and parent. "Susan is concerned about all the children. She will fight not just for the low student or the high student, but for all the students. She looks for equity in all. Her organizational skills really shine, she gets to the crux of a issue quickly." Christine Broers, 2005 Teacher of the Year, Eisenhower Elementary School Susan McGhie candidate for CUSD Board of Trustees is a naturally recognized leader. She has been honored to serve as past Chair of two of our local schools School Site Council (SSC) for five years (Eisenhower and Hyde). Susan McGhie has enthusiastically supported school improvement ideas that have given teachers training and support. On Susan's tenure Eisenhower school's outstanding performance has steadily increased. She is currently on Cupertino High and Eisenhower Elementary School's SSC. Susan McGhie has extensive experience on CUSD committees and task forces. Susan has been on and contributed to these key committees: District Advisory Board, Middle School Attendance Area Task Force, Technology Advisory Committee, Facilities Advisory Committee, and Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Advisory Committee. Her work and opinions are highly considered. As she has served on these committees many parents have told her she is the most willing to listen to the community and their concerns. Susan and her husband Brian were selected PTA Honorary Service Award recipients. Susan single-handedly set up a second computer lab to teach keyboarding at Eisenhower Elementary School. Brian has started his 10th year teaching a Math Olympiad class at the elementary school. Susan a University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Master Gardener teaches a Jr. Master Gardener class at Eisenhower Elementary School. She has been an active parent volunteer for 10 years. She desires to continue her service to the community by becoming a Board of Trustee for CUSD. Susan McGhie holds a B.S. in Information Management from Brigham Young University (BYU). She was recruited and hired by IBM as an Engineer. She was a highly sought after undergraduate student employee in BYU's Information Services Department. Susan McGhie is married to Brian McGhie who was raised in Cupertino. His father was a retired Homestead High School math teacher and athletic director who coached several highly successful basketball and tennis teams. Brian and Susan have been married for almost 17 years. They have four children. A Cupertino High School student. A Hyde Middle School Student. An Eisenhower Elementary student. Their youngest is at Meyerholz Elementary School's Cupertino Language Immersion Program (CLIP) learning Mandarin. All of her children have an interest in learning another language. The other children have studied Japanese for years. Susan McGhie is a product of California public schools. She is the daughter of two California schoolteachers. She knows what it is like to grow up on a teacher's salary. She follows her father's footsteps, as he was a School Board Trustee in California. Susan is a substitute teacher. She was a tutor as a high school student tutoring at her former elementary school for her former teachers. She went on to be Manager of Training for WordPerfect Corporation in their heyday. She developed and oversaw the training for major corporations. Susan McGhie has coached a young women's basketball team. She has also helped coach a PAL softball team in Santa Clara, a Santa Clara Youth Soccer League team, and a Cupertino YMCA basketball team. Susan McGhie is a leader over youth and children's programs in her church. Susan is an assistant camp director for a girls camp each summer. Susan McGhie has been a volunteer with many community organizations. She has been a Cupertino Emergency Response Volunteer. Susan organized and was a key contributor to the widely known and "best" Master Gardener website in the state of California (http://www.mastergardeners.org/scc.html). This site has voluntarily become host to all of California's Master Gardener websites. Susan has been on numerous boards in the valley. She has been on the Cupertino Waterfall Condominium Board. She was instrumental in helping bring an end to a lawsuit against the builder. She has been on a Silicon Valley computer user's group board. She has also been on the Santa Clara County UCCE Master Gardener Advisory Board. Please vote for Susan McGhie on November 8th. |
