Position Statement

By Sheldon Arnold Zaslansky

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Manhattan Beach Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
I have been a successful business owner for over thirty years. My experience has taught me the crucial importance of financial oversight. The residents of Manhattan Beach have generously supported its schools through the years. Using any measurement, they have not gotten what they paid for.

I have been privileged to sit on the board of the New Designs Charter School, a school that does not have nearly the financial resources as the schools in our community. Yet by spending funds wisely, they have con- sistently surpassed the goals set by the State and by the parents who have enrolled their children.

It is my position that public schools in California no longer graduate well-rounded students. That is why I feel exposure to the arts, music and physical education should be a crucial component of the education provided the Manhattan Beach Students.

Technology is rapidly evolving. It is essential that the school system keep up with the changing demands of industry. Seeking partnership with private industry would assist the schools in meeting these demands.

All five of my children have gone to public schools. The education they received was the foundation of their later successes in college and careers. My six year old is attending Pacific Elementary. Helping provide a first class education for her and all of the students of the district is the primary reason I am running for the school board.
