A 30-year resident of South Pasadena, Harry is married and has two children attending Monterey Hills and South Pasadena Middle School.

Harry Gerst believes in children first.

Since 1974 Harry has been employed by the Los Angeles Unified School District as teacher, school coordinator, District Advisor, school principal (his school received the prestigious California Distinguished School Award) and District Administrator. Harry has been the District Administrator for the Magnet Program benefiting 160 schools and over 65,000 students. He was also administrator for the District's Parent Unit representing over 600 parent councils. He continues to oversee publication of "The Parent Press," a newsletter for parents sent to a half million homes. Under Harry's direction, his office secured over $600 million in state and federal grants.

Harry is committed to shared decision making and believes with the support of teachers, parents and the community, students will have high performing schools.

High achieving school districts have board meetings that focus on achievement, excellence in teaching and learning, long-range planning and financial support for programs and services. Decisions should be guided by the question, "Is it best for our kids?"
