Ana Apodaca is a long-time resident of Newark. She attended Newark schools and is a graduate of CSU Hayward. She is a Community and Government Relations Manager. As the former District Director to Senator Liz Figueroa, Ana has worked for nearly a decade to solve local, regional and statewide issues. While working with Senator Figueroa, Ana worked with local police chiefs on public safety legislation to strengthen Megan's Law. In addition, Ana worked on many transportation issues such as BART to San Jose, ACE train, and the I-680 HOV lane, to name a few. She was the key staff person that guided legislation, signed by Governor Schwarzenegger, that kept millions of state transportation funding in southern Alameda County. Ana thrives on giving back to her community and has been actively involved in public service throughout the East Bay. She serves as the President of the Hispanic Community Affairs Council, which awards scholarships to Latino students pursuing a higher education. During her eight years on the board she has awarded over 500 scholarships totaling over half a million dollars. In addition, Ana is involved with the City of Newark and Newark Unified School District Strategic Planning Committee, Newark Business Education Roundtable (NBERT), and is a mentor for the Puente Project at Chabot Community College. She is an Advisory Boardmember for SAVE (Shelter Against Violent Environments), a parishioner of St. Edward's Church and a Newark Days volunteer. In 2002, Ana was appointed Commissioner by Supervisor Gail Steele to the Alameda County Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). The Commission advises and assists the Alameda County Board of Supervisors on matters pertaining to women, such as prejudice and discrimination complaints on the basis of gender. In June 2003, Ana received the Latinas Moving Upward Public Service Award from the Hispanic Chamber of Alameda County (HCCAC). In Ana's spare time, she enjoys visiting with family and friends. She is also an avid sports fan and enjoys exercising regularly. In her downtime, Ana can be found curling up with a good book. |
