Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Anita Quinonez Gabrielian

Candidate for
Trustee; Glendale Community College District

This information is provided by the candidate

One of the most important things the next Board of Trustees will accomplish in the coming year is to hire a new Superintendent/President for our college. I it is essential to maintain stable and experienced leadership on the Board to secure an excellent candidate and to facilitate a smooth transition. I will work diligently throughout the process to assure that we get the best qualified candidate for our college.

I believe in open lines of communication with the community that we serve. Following Dr. Hacopian's example of reaching out to the community, I formed a Latino Issues Group to better communicate and involve our community. I have been supportive and involved in the Armenian Issues Group and encouraged a "State of the College" forum. As the first Latina to serve on the College Board, I believe that I have been a catalyst to other firsts in our college community. Two wonderful EOPS counselors organized the first ever Latino Student Success Day. The parent handbook has been translated into Spanish for the first time. All of these things help increase our student success rate.

Student fees have increased substantially; tuition has increased from $11 per unit to $26 per unit. I believe that it is even more important to maintain or even increase outreach activities and financial aid education. I firmly believe that education is an opportunity that must remain affordable and reachable for everyone in our community.

I bring over twenty-four years of business experience in the private sector to the Board. I want to continue to put my skills to work for the benefit of the entire community.
