Saving Our Heritage

By Julia A. Tedesco

Candidate for Council Member; City of Manhattan Beach

This information is provided by the candidate
My efforts as President of the MB Historical Society sacved the Manhattan Beach Municipal Pier and the Historic Red House that now sits in Polliwog Park
During my two terms as President of the Manhattan Beach Historical Socity, I was the driving force in the successful efforts that convinced the City Council to restore our municipal Pier. The Manhattan Beach Pier is the oldest pier on the west coast. It was built in 1917. The unique rounded end was designed to withstand constant wave action. Our Pier is the symbol of this community. I am proud that we were able to save this wonderful assest of our town!

Almost immediately after our efforts to save the pier, a very well preserved 1905 beach house was due for demolition. As President of the Historical Society, I was one of several responsible for convincing the City Council to allot $20,000.00 to move the Red House twice, while we looked for a place to permanently position the house. We eventually convinced the School Board, current owners of Polliwog Park, to allow us to place the Red House in the Park. The Red House has been totally refurbished and is now the current location of the Historical Society and Museum. Hundreds of school aged children visit the museum and learn the rich history of Manhattan Beach.

For the past 29 years I have given my time and talent to the community of Manhattan Beach. Our city needs a Council with passion for our lifestyle, a commitment to our future and the knowledge of our City's traditions. I ask for your vote on March 8th, so that I can represent you on our City Council. Thank you. Julia Tedesco
