Statement for the Office of Harbor Commissioner

By Pietro Parravano

Candidate for Harbor Commissioner; San Mateo County Harbor District

This information is provided by the candidate
Clean oceans, sustainable fisheries, public access, thriving coastal communities
My intention as a Commissioner is to continue to provide the best services and opportunities that the harbors have to offer. My commitment is to enhance and promote economically vital harbors for the benefit of all user groups and to maintain a clean natural setting for all to enjoy. I am seeking re-election because I want to enhance the facilities and opportunities offered by the District by connecting the public with the marine environment that surrounds San Mateo County.

I was one of eighteen Americans chosen to serve on the Pew National Oceans Commission. We issued a national report to the U.S. Congress that will sustain ocean and coastal resources. The issues that this Commission addressed include coastal development, ocean pollution and fishing practices. I am a delegate to the World Fisheries Forum whose goal is to promote clean oceans, sustainable fisheries, and viable coastal communities throughout the world. I work with the chefs of the Culinary Institute of America educating them on the importance of serving local, seasonal seafood. I am working toward installing interpretive signs on coastal trails to raise awareness of the marine environment.

My dedication and commitment to the marine environment, sustainable fishing practices, coastal communites and marine resources has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, National Fisherman, Half Moon Bay, San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, California legislature and United States Congress.

As Commissioner, I supported the fishermen by introducing a resolution that emphasizes using wild salmon in all District facilities. Recently, I worked with the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors in adopting a similar resolution that promotes and encourages the use of wild salmon.

I will continue to advocate the sustainable use of marine resources and offer a balanced perspective.

I have resided in the County with my wife for 26 years. I graduated from Woodside Priory School. My education includes a B.S. in Chemistry and an M.S. in Biology.
