A Healthy Environment for a Healthy Community

By Shawn P. Reifsteck

Candidate for Supervisor; County of San Francisco; District 7

This information is provided by the candidate
In order to build a healthy community, we must focus on improving the health of our environment. I have extensive experience in environmental issues and I believe we can do better in our city. Here's how:
San Francisco has a long and proud tradition as being one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the country. A commitment to clean air and water, open space and sound energy policy is essential if we are to maintain our excellent quality of life. If we falter at protecting our natural environment, we will severely jeopardize our city's quality of life.

As a lifelong conservationist, I will work tirelessly to help implement the key objectives outlined in the City's Sustainability Plan. This plan is critical to the long-term health of our community and as Supervisor, it will be one of my highest priorities. Specifically, I will focus on those issues where I can be most effective. They include:

  • Improving San Francisco's air quality
  • Maintaining and expanding the amount of green and open space in the City
  • Improving public transportation accessibility, reliability and usage (including improving our public transportation's service and reliability so as to entice ridership)
  • Ensuring water quality, reducing water usage and improving wastewater management plans
  • Increasing quality public awareness and education programs to ensure residents understand their roles in the City's long-term health and sustainability.

I will also work to provide more resources to important City entities working on conservation issues including the San Francisco Department of the Environment. In order to maintain our environmental reputation, additional resources must be allocated to ensuring that our residents are able to breath fresh air, drink clean water, and enjoy green spaces. I am committed to bringing more financial resources--both public and private--to environmental priorities of this city.
