Candidate for
Board Member; San Marcos Unified School District

I believe my involvement with our local schools and the community has given me insight on a wide range of issues facing our educational system. My focus as your current School Board Trustee includes:

• Constructing needed facilities;
• Hiring and retaining excellent educators;
• Maintaining higher academic expectations;
• Providing safe and secure campuses;
• Ensuring prudent financial decisions; and,
• Promoting effective communication between the District and the community.

1) School Construction - Ours is the fastest growing school district in North County. The District has constructed seven new schools in the past nine years to keep pace with the influx of students in the community. Extensive renovations have been made to several older facilities. I will ensure that constructing two new elementary schools, rebuilding San Marcos Elementary and modernizing older facilities stay on track to meet growing needs.

2) Challenging Curriculum - Student test scores are improving, and when compared with students of similar socio-economic backgrounds most San Marcos schools stand head and shoulders above the rest. Is this the best we should expect from our School District? Not by a long shot! Continued emphasis needs to be placed on reaching every student so that whether they seek a college education or vocational training our students are best prepared. I will promote higher academic standards and encourage educators to use a variety of teaching techniques to reach all students in their pursuit of higher education or a chosen vocation.

3) Fiscal Responsibility - I support fiscally conservative budgets and will ensure that the District's long and short term financial decisions continue to remain prudent and focused for classroom benefit as have been documented in the past several years of positive audit analyses.
