local, public control of waterI do not view water as a commodity. That idea ignores the social, environmental, aesthetic, and spiritual aspects of water and, in fact, even minimizes some of its economic importance. Private corporations think of water only as a commodity whose primary function is to earn money for the stock holders. Decisions regarding its use must consider all of water's values. For example, whether or not Fall Creek is beautiful is a serious consideration. To insure that all of the public's issues are considered in water use decisions, the public must have the ultimate power in making the decisions. That means public, local control. |
