EDUCATION

By Colleen Corrigan-Armstrong

Candidate for Council Member; City of Capitola

This information is provided by the candidate
Capitola HAD an elementary school and needs to have one again. Our City also needs to promote and encourgae more child and senior based community programs throughout the year.
Regarding the closure of Capitola Elementary, I am talking to and working with several people who would like to see the reopening of that school. Our children need to have a school that they can call their own. Hopefully, there will be new members of the Soquel School Board who are willing to listen and help in the procurement of funds to reopen our school. It seems unfair that our neighboring community has two open elementary schools and we lost our one and only. Right now, New Brighton Middle School is undergoing some fantastic renovations. My hope is that there will be room for another Capitola Elementary School in the near future. So many families are saddened by the fact that their children can no longer walk to school. We need proper education. We NEED a school.

I feel that our children are being overlooked. There is an amazing Senior Center but no place for just our children. The Capitola Junior Lifeguard Program is the most wonderful opportunity for our kids but it is only offered in the summer. I believe that we need more community-wide outreach programs like the Lifeguard Program for our kids to participate in. We have a wonderful opportunity to engage our children with the rest of our citizens to learn about preservation, conservation and our unique wildlife. This area needs to flourish with the help of the whole community.
