Ballot statement

By Robert Heisey

Candidate for Board Member; Gilroy Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
My wife and I have lived in Gilroy with our two boys since 1988. Our oldest son graduated from GHS, our youngest will enter 9th grade this fall. I earned a Ph.D. degree in Plant Breeding from Cornell University, and have been employed in the vegetable seed industry for 23 years. My experience managing programs where budget cuts were an almost yearly occurrence will be useful in the situation we face at GUSD.

While working with the Alliance on several curriculum issues, I came to realize the importance of School Board membership. To speed progress, the Board must take the lead in requiring that all students have a rigorous curriculum.

My wife is a teacher, so I have seen the challenges teachers face. Teachers must be given more time to teach; we must limit their other responsibilities. We cannot expect teachers to bear full responsibility for students' success. Parents must take a more active role in requiring maximum effort from their children.

I believe the public education system is one of the cornerstones of our democracy. It is through education that every citizen is guaranteed equal opportunity for success in our society.
