Ballot Statement

By Rhoda Bress

Candidate for Board Member; Gilroy Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
The following ballot statement was filed at the Registry of Voters.
I believe it is time to put the "public" back in the public schools. Parents and students need leaders who will focus on the classroom experience and ensure the delivery of a quality education. Gilroyans expect school board members to represent the community they are elected to serve, not rubberstamp administrative recommendations.

A Gilroy resident since 1986, I have three children who graduated from the district and one still enrolled. For the past 18 years, I have served as a volunteer in classrooms, on district committees, and on four parent club boards. As a founder of Odyssey Theatre, I advocate for arts in the curriculum. My efforts on behalf of classroom reform resulted in the reinstitution of honors classes and a new language arts curriculum at Gilroy High School. A graduate of public schools, I received my B.A. in government from Barnard College.

I want to live in a community that has as much pride in its public school system as it does in its Garlic Festival. Gilroy needs a trustee who understands what the community wants and will never lose sight of the ultimate goal, an education that allows all students to reach their fullest potential.
