Candidate for
Governing Board Member; Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate

As a native of Tiquisate, Escuintla, Guatemala Central America, whom immigrated to Santa Monica, California in 1968, not speaking a word of English, I know first hand the culture differences that unite us and make us stronger, as well as those that challenge us and that make our community so unique.

My involvement in the District dates back to 1985 when my own daughter was attending McKinley School and I was beginning to get my feet wet while attending PTA meetings, I was approached and requested to be the parent representative to McKinley School Site Council.

I have been involved since then in various committees, been a volunteer for a number of events, Chaired several other committees and attended numerous board meetings on behalf of our kids. I have lobbied in Sacramento, in City Council, at the District Board and in many other ways, for the betterment of all of our children in the district.

Having been a member of the community for over 30 years and as acquired through my leadership or volunteer involvement, I bring my life experience and skills in working in an economically, racially and culturally diverse community. I believe that: Every child has the intelligence and ability to succeed. We just need to provide them with the necessary tools and opportunities as well as a safe and conducive environment to do so. To this end, I will continue to work endless hours. I will use these experiences and skills to assist us in guiding our School District in providing the excellent education that our children deserve and are entitled to receiving. I am looking forward to working in collaboration with our staff, teachers, administrators, parents, students, leaders and all of our constituents in achieving this goal.
