Candidate Statement

By Jose Escarce

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Dr. Escarce's candidate statement for the voter information booklets.
As School Board president, I helped steer our School District through California's budget crisis while fostering educational excellence and financial accountability. Academic achievement is rising for ALL students, and the achievement gap between advantaged and disadvantaged students is narrowing. More 8th graders are mastering algebra. Santa Monica and Malibu High Schools are in the top 1-2% of American schools on performance in college-level Advanced Placement courses. Our music and arts programs shine, and our budgets are balanced.

I am committed to helping ALL children reach their potential and develop their creativity and critical-thinking skills. During my next term I will work to:

  • Provide a challenging curriculum to ALL students
  • Improve special education
  • Strengthen intervention programs
  • Promote professional development for teachers
  • Expand music and arts programs

I graduated from Princeton, earned a masters' from Harvard, received my M.D. and economics Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, and completed medical residency at Stanford. Currently, I am Professor of Medicine at UCLA. My wife, Eileen, and I have three children in our schools. I am bilingual and can bring people together to achieve shared goals. With your vote, I will help our District become one of the best in California.
