Ruth Castro Biography

Ruth was raised in Monterey Park and is a graduate of Alhambra High School (82). She lives in Alhambra with her daughter Camila.

Ruth received her Associates of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts from Marymount Palos Verdes College and went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from California State University, Fullerton. After working as a vocational rehabilitation counselor, Ruth returned to school and received her teaching credentials from California State University, Pomona. She is in the process of completing a Masters Degree program from Pepperdine University.

Ruth has over ten years of teaching experience. She began her commitment to education by working with juvenile offenders as an instructional assistant for Los Pinos Conservation Camp in Lake Elsinore. When Ruth first obtained her teaching credential, she taught for Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District at La Mirada High School.

Ruth's commitment to education issues led her to work for the California State Legislature from 1998 - 1999. She served as a field representative to Assembly Member Gilbert Cedillo and later as District Director for Assembly Member Gloria Romero.

In 2000, Ruth was elected to the Alhambra Elementary and High School District Board and has served as President and Vice President of the Board. During her tenure, she was also elected as a Delegate to the California School Board Members Association and as Secretary for the California Latino School Board Members Association.

Ruth currently teaches for Los Angles Unified School District at Monterey Continuation High School in East Los Angeles and was appointed by the School Board President to their Options Task Force in order to make recommendations to the Board regarding their alternative education programs.

Ruth has received commendations from school board members and was named as a "Hometown Hero" by Toyota and Los Angeles Dodgers for her commitment to education and teaching "at risk" youth.

Ruth will continue to fight for a quality education for all students. As a teacher with first hand experience, Ruth's knowledge and expertise is crucial in matters of curriculum development. Ruth can be contacted at 626 570-9291.
