Stop the "traffic calming" madnesss and get traffic moving again.

By Bill Bauer

Candidate for Councilmember; City of Santa Monica

This information is provided by the candidate
Traffic increases at the rate of one or two percent per year, yet the City's goal is to reduce it by ten percent by forcing people out of their private vehicles.
Traffic calming must stop. Traffic increases one to two-percent per year, yet the City responds by narrowing traffic lanes, reducing a street's capacity to carry traffic, installs landscaped center islands, speed bumps, curb extensions, roundabouts and deliberately un-coordinated signal sequences. It's all designed to slow traffic, create gridlock and force a frustrated you out of your car and onto a bus, bike or your feet.

The City's circulation element is woefully out of date, yet that hasn't stopped the city from implementing piecemeal anti-vehicle traffic measures. The current strategy of social engineering us out of our private vehicles flies in the face of reality and common sense.

I don't want to force you out of your car, So, I'd update the circulation element, stop the traffic calming especially on the major arteries and insist on getting traffic moving, again -- in a safe and expedient manner.
